The GTX 770 seems to outperform the R9 280X in most cases and has much better drivers too. But it's slightly older and cheaper when buying used (in the UK).

Hello!

Before you decide between those, I would have a look at a 290x and 970, the 970 comes with Maxwell which gives you great benifits now and in the future for gaming. All are excellent cards, but if you can get a 970 or 290x they would be your best for your money. But between those cards you said, I would personally go for the 770. If the 970 is within your budget that would be your best choice.

I am also from the UK and they have similer prices I believe.

Hope this helps!

I need a GPU to pair with a G3258. The CPU will surely bottleneck the GTX 970 (but I have to admit the Maxwell architecture is great!). The R9 290X performs great too, but it will be bottlenecked by the Pentium and the R9 290 is quite power-hungry (and so not as efficient as Maxwell GPUs). If I had a higher budget, I would surely spend an extra 100 quid and get the GTX 970.

The 280x and 770 trade blows but the 280x generally edges it out in what I consider 'Games that matter' from the benchmarks I remember seeing some time ago the 770 would usually pull ahead in games when the average fps was 80+ so in games where you were close to what many consider 'playable' the 280x edged out. Note this is not the case for every game but I found it true for most of the big title games that I was interested in playing. Along with that the 280x has 3GB of VRAM which is increasingly becoming more handy.

Either way you can't go wrong with which one you choose but my biased vote goes to the 280x.

This is my opinion as well, from my experience the G3258 is best with the GTX 960 or the R9 270x, if you go higher, it will bottleneck the graphics card.

Just get the best [performing gpu you can afford. A gpu being bottlenecked is no issue, just push graphics settings higher, and those settings affecting cpu (such as shadows in some games) lower.

Drop in a better cpu down the road.

A beefier gpu will give you a better gaming experience in most games, than a beefier cpu upgrade.

Btw, a g3258 @ 4+ ghz performs in the same realm as i3/i5/i7 for most games

Personally I would get a r9 280, if you just plan on matching it best.

gtx 960, is overpriced imo, and i would only consider it if you have a low wattage psu.

2gb vram is starting to see limits @ 1080p for newer games on ultra settings.

Thanks man, I'll be getting that instead. It's a bargain. Between the R9 280 and 280X is perfect for me. Thanks.
