Which is better to upgrade atm: CPU or GPU?

I'm having trouble choosing which component to replace whether my CPU or GPU. I've decided to donate either one to my nephew and replace it with a better one.

I currently have:

gtx 1060 as GPU
i5 6500 as CPU

If I am to replace my cpu I'm getting a 6700k or 6600k

If I am to replace my GPU I'm getting a GTX 1070.

Which do you think is more beneficial or have more noticeable difference in performance?

Details please to back up your reasoning.

Personally, I'd be more interested in exactly what your nephew currently has, and that'll determine what your choice should be. Cpus are hard unless your nephew currently has a lga1151 mobo, if it's 1150, it can't be swapped, so gpu would be the only viable choice.

Since it's a gift, why not just deal with what you do have, which is decent anyways, and actually buy your nephew a brand new item that he'd get more use from? It may be that best upgrade for him would be an SSD etc.

It depends what you want to do on it, and what kind of monitor you want to use.

You are correct, I don't need an upgrade. But I will have to give either one of the components to my nephew as a gift still. So I'm trying to figure out which would be a better component to give as a gift and replace it to better one judging from my choices.

I mostly play games on it. I don't do any content creations like video edits and stuff, but I'm not sure if I will in the future.

I have 1080p 60hz monitor.

2400 16gb ddr4 ram
z170 mobo
1tb wd blue hdd
512g ssd

So are you saying I give either one of the components as a gift and buy the same thing? Like give away my gtx 1060, and buy another gtx 1060 to replace my 1060 that I gave away? or give away my i5 6500 and get a new i5 6500?

Did I get that right?

oh.. alright. I guess a cpu upgrade is a superior upgrade than a GPU in my case. I guess I'll order one soon. 😀 Thanks

using CPUID HWmonitor, my cpu is around 80% when playing wow at ultra settings with AA at MSAA 8x 50-70%, maximum of 96-100%; GPU 75-85%, Maximum of 95-100%

If I had more money I'd compare i5 6600k with GTX 1060 vs i5 6500 GTX 1070 to see how much difference they have in terms of performance, and to see which has more "bang for the buck" upgrade route when it comes to gaming.

Well if they are competing equally then the truth probably is that you really dont need an upgrade, but I realise it is so you can give a gift to your nephew. For 1080p gaming you really don't need more than a 1060 and you will have an all round snappier, more responsive system with an improved CPU, and the option to overclock too which you dont currently have.

Yes, I'm aware that I don't need an upgrade. I just want my nephew to have a good experience on pc building so I decided to give up 1 component as a gift. I guess I'll get either the 6600k or 6700k depending on the budget in the near future. 😀

He already decided to get lga 1151 socket so he's good with 6500.
