I won't be playing many games. So ghosting while playing game sis not a problem for me. But anytime I went into CompUSA, I alsways thought the test, graphics on CRT monitor is better than Flat Panel. But I am still willing to take a chance on an LCD and would like to get a 20" one. Which is the best under $1000?

Also, were any new LCDs announced at the CES?

Yes, lots. More 18"-20" too, with decent response times. Look at my post today. I would definitely wait a few months for these new 20" LCDs.

If you can get your hands on one I have heard the Dell Ultrasharp 2001FP is a nice monitor (20.1", 16ms and 1600 x 1200) $899 US on the Dell USA web site. I'm unsure why Toms Hardware hasn't done a review on it. Uses the LG Phillips LM210U04 panel.

I second that. I just got two last night (in Australia but had to ship from US) and am very pleased.

I've played Max Payne 2, UT 2003 and BF1942 on it and the ghosting is less severe than other LCDs I've played on, including the hercules.

The physical form factor is relativly good - however the designers still have something to learn from Apple...the stand in particular is ugly, but very functional and good quality.

Both monitors have bad pixels. One has a single one with the red stuck on, while the other has 2 with one of the colours stuck off - not sure which 😉 I tested quickly with an all blank then an all white screen. I don't think either qualify for a warranty exchange and given I'd have to ship back to the US, I wouldn't bother.

So - thumbs up here from a layman :)

Any reason to insist a 20"? There are plenty of 19" with good performance and better price (in comparing with 20"). Why spend >$300 for 1" differences?

i just purchased the 2001fp and played some tribes2 on it and its lovely. it does have 1 dead pixel that i can see when the screen goes black but otherwise its really impossible to notice. i really cannot notice any ghosting and its nice sized, great clarity. i love it and i waited forever to make my purchase cause i wanted 19"+ but no ghosting. great monitor

You can barely buy a 19" with 1024x768 for the price of the 2001FP - certainly here in Aus (I paid AU$1100 to my door). The exchange rates are working for *us* for a change :)

So same price, bigger, higher res and apparently less ghosting - what's not to like?

Yes, price concern is the answer. If same money can bring me something bigger and faster, the answer is clear. Today 2001FP is selling at $999 on the web. I would rather save $300 and stay with 19" like Dell 1901FP. It is too expensive to me to spend $300 just to get 1600*1200.

Well, I only paid US$850 including free shipping and that was only a week or 2 ago. It was as low as 750 at one point. The rrp is always 999, but have you ever known Dell *not* to have some confusing coupon system running? I called and got 15% discount even though the site was only offering 10% because some wording was ambiguous.

As I say, in Australia it was the same price as the lower end 19" screens, cheaper than the hercules and DVI Samsungs.

ones that have low ass response times.... this LCD i have here rocks... but next one is gonna be a 20" with 12ms!!!

Yeah, I got a 213T for it's 1600x1200 resolution. It's not as good as a nice CRT but my desk here is just too small. I got it for about 1100 from Best Buy with $100 rebate (still waiting for rebate).
