Hello Guys,

I'm planning to upgrade the GPU in my HP xw4600 workstation. The specs of the PC are :Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650,Gigabyte GT240 1GB, 8GB RAM, 500GB 7200rpm HDD,128GB SSD, 1440x900 Benq Display. I'm a big Resident Evil game series fan.Was able to play till RE6 in my PC at medium flawlessly, but since RE7 DX11 is mandatory.I have a max budget of $150-$180. Can anyone suggest the best GPU for this price range?

Thank You.

Fastest card in that price range is the GTX 1050 Ti at the low end or the RX-470 at the high end of your budget. But the 470 requires a good quality 450W PSU minimum. The 1050 Ti can run on most 300W if you get one that doesn't require a 6-pin connector.

There are also a couple RX-480 cards that come in just under your budget: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007709%20601203793&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=36

The only thing that worries me is if a new Nvidia card work on that older motherboard bios. AMD tends to work better with older motherboards, unfortunately your current choices on the AMD side are the RX 460 or RX 470. The 460 is a bit underpowered for your needs I think, even the 4gb version. The 470 is perfect in performance but costs possibly too much. The 1050 Ti is the Goldilocks "just right" but will it work in your system? I'd do some looking around if I was you, see if you can find information on if these cards work on X38 motherboards.

Either of these options would be great but if you can shoot for the RX 480 one, go that route.

My PSU is an 80 Plus Bronze 475W. I checked today and it has a 6 pin connector kept zip tied. Also the RX-470& 480 seems to be good choice.

Just saw on Linustech another person with same model xw4600 but Core 2 Quad Q6600 with AMD RX-470 where they say it works but the CPU is a bottleneck in that case, whereas mine is a Q9650. Will it be a bad investment on the RX-470 or should I just stick with the 1050i for now and get a new rig all together later?

The RX-480 is a really nice GPU but I'm worried that my CPU might be a bottleneck and it won't utilise the full potential of the GPU.

The RX-470 or 480 will both be great. I have a Q9550 in an older build. It is fine with my Gigabyte RX-470. Bottleneck will only occur in certain CPU-heavy games. You can go with less card if bottleneck worries you, but you will get less performance too. Heck, I've even stuck my GTX 980 in with with that Q9550. Lots of CPU bottleneck that time, but more performance too.

Thanks. Guess I can safely buy RX-470 then since its better than GTX1050i and I think it will be better incase I plan to built a new hardware soon :). Currently I have only GTA V, Battlefield 4 and PES 2016 on my PC. Tried RE7:Biohazard but it doesn't work since I don't have DX11 support. One final question. What is your opinion about the GTX 750 Ti?

Even if it did, there is always a component in your build that is the bottleneck but it won't. :)

Better than what you have now, but less performance than the aforementioned cards. The GTX 1050 Ti is the "new" GTX 750 Ti. With major improvement. I've had a couple 750 ti's (still have a L-P 750 Ti in my OPtiplex 790 SFF). Good for medium settings at 1080p in most games at playable framerates.

Till now I used my 1440x900 benq display which only has a VGA port.So I usually play most games at 1280x1024 or sometimes at 1440x900 at meduim setting to max depending on the game. I do have another Dell 1080p display that I currently connected to my Optiplex 7010. Initially I had it conected to my HP xw4600 but due to the underpowered GPU rendering at 1080p was terrible.Well all the afore mentioned GPUs do not have a VGA.

I don't mind playing a game at medium or low setting unless it is absolutely horrible.Infact most of the times I don't play at high settings or I never could :D(crappy GPU) .I hope the RX-470 will solve that problem. Sorry, what is "the pad tape mod"?
