GTX 960 outperform in Gaming
R9 280 multitask are awesome (Great Gaming, also you can do Rendering/All the design thingy)

The GTX 960 lands in between the 280 and 280x, so the 960 is the better of those 2, especially when you consider how much you can overclock the 960. It'll also run a lot cooler and more efficiently.

Gtx 960 better than r9 280.. if you go with r9 280 its not gives you very high quality and gtx 960 is a newer card and gives you latest driver and feature with all new technology .. i think you should go with gtx 960 ..

The GTX 960 is rated at 120W while the R9 280 is rated at 250W, so that is an advantage.
The GTX 960 is also a little faster.
The R9 280 however has 3GB of VRAM compared to 2GB, which is an advantage in games with high memory usage like Skyrim with mods.

If your power supply can handle it, I would probably choose the R9 280.
If you can afford the extra money, I would choose a GTX 970 over both these cards.
The GTX 970 is rated at 145W, has 4GB of VRAM (best to keep usage under 3.5GB) and is substantially faster than either of these cards.

If you are using a monitor of 1080p go ahead with the 960 GTX is gonna be better, but if u go further save some money and get the r9 280x wich is better in many ways.

The R9 285 is slower than the R9 280 and has less video memory. I wouldn't touch it.
The R9 280X is a great card, faster than both the R9 280 or GTX 960 and includes 3GB of video memory.
The GTX 970 is better again of course, but more expensive.
