Hi all,
I'm starting my first build on a gigabyte ga-z97m-d3h motherboard. After comparing the manual to the actual board I'm at a loss which port is sata0.
0 and 1 are arranged one on top of the other, rising up off the board like a 2 story building, while ports 2-6 are layed out side by side like 4 nextdor neighbors. The diagram shows all 6 layed out side by side so I'm not sure if 0 is on top or the bottom. I assume bottom because if you tip the "building" over then it would match the diagram...

Help please!
Thanks,
Jamey

Yes - any port. You just set the boot order in the BIOS if you have more than one disk. If you only have the one disk, that's it.

Some motherboards have two different SATA controllers and in that case it might matter which port you plugged a drive into (for example, you would want to ensure that you plugged an SSD into a SATA 3 port). All the ports on your motherboard are identical.

Hi McHenry,
Doesn't it matter? I read that I should plug in the HDD with the OS into sata0. Would it be ok in any port?

It depends if you have OCD or not and whether or not having your boot devices in order matters to you. As far as the system is concerned it makes no difference.

(I have several OSs on my main computer - the disk plugged into port 0 is the one with Windows 10 Technical Preview on it. Before that I had nothing plugged into port 0. I can boot from any of the drives with no problems.)
