In the market for a new laptop.
Price <$750. Windows OS. Will be used mainly for general use with possibility for photo editing for my wife (as a backup/mobile version to her desktop). Not planning on video editing or gaming per se at this time. Minimum 14" screen and doesn't need touchscreen or 2-1 tablet/notebook capability.
I do realize some complaints of 'dull screen' on all these models, but seems to be common with all laptops at this level and I don't have the money to go to the next level of $1000-2000 price point.
Here are my top 3 (prices from company store)...
  • Swift 3 Laptop - SF314-55G-50PM $599
    • Intel® Core™ i5-8265U processor Quad-core 1.60 GHz
    • NVIDIA® GeForce® MX150 with 2 GB dedicated memory
    • 14" Full HD (1920 x 1080) 16:9 IPS
    • 8 GB, DDR4 SDRAM
    • 512 GB SSD
  • Swift 3 Laptop - SF314-57-59EY $679
    • Intel® Core™ i5-1035G1 processor Quad-core 1 GHz
    • Intel® UHD Graphics shared memory
    • 14" Full HD (1920 x 1080) 16:9 IPS
    • 8 GB, LPDDR4
    • 256 GB SSD
  • Dell Inspiron 14 5493 $629
    10th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-1035G1 Processor (6MB Cache, up to 3.6 GHz)
Intel® UHD Graphics with shared graphics memory
  • 14.0-inch FHD (1920 x 1080) Anti-glare LED Backlight Non-touch Narrow Border WVA Display
    8 GB, 1 x 8 GB, DDR4, 2666 MHz
512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive
Questions:
  1. Is the lack of USB-C on the Dell model an instant disqualification these days in your opinion?
  2. Between the 2 Swifts, I think the $599 model seems like a better value since it has twice the storage and has discrete MX150 graphics compared to the one with the 10th gen i5. Would you agree? Do you think the 10th gen i5 would make much of a difference in performance?
  3. Is there another laptop of similar specs that you would recommend that isn't listed? I also looked at Swift 5, but mainly didn't like that the RAM was soldered to the Mobo and didn't seem to offer much more than the 3 other than a touch screen.

Thank you so much for your time and responses.

You could look into older used laptops. I know 2015 MacBook Pros go for around that price I assume some windows models would be around the same.
