Which LCD is good?

My CRT monitor died. I want to buy a LCD flat panel, but I have no idea how to choose it.

Which brands are good? Can anyone give me a list?

What's your budget, what size do you want, and what are you going to be doing on the computer?

My budget is around $300-400.
Flat Panel size is 17"

By the way, does it matter what I do with the computer has anything to do the monitor?

Regular use?

Gaming?

Video?

Because some monitors are much sharper text and color quality and there gaming use is horrible because of ghosting due to bad response times.
