Hello,

I recently bought a Proliant ML350 G5 server with only 1 CPU installed: Xeon E5420 (socket 771).

I am planning to upgrade to two CPUs (recplacing the current one) and I'm really a .... when it comes to searching and finding these kind of things :) Which CPU would you guys recommend? [strike]And is there any socket 771 quadcore with Hyperthreading tech[/strike]? Oh and I need VT aswell [you know.. server, virtualisation, etc 😛 ]

Help is very appreciated :)

Solution
Well the 5450 would cost at least 2 times the price of your 5420 and I don't think it is worth it. Sure if you can find cheaper 5450s then it's great but I don't think so, so unless you find cheap 5450/5462, I would just go for a second 5420.
Unfortunately hyperthreading for xeon came with 1366, so best you can get is a quadcore. What is best is easy to say. It would most likely be the Xeon X5470 or Xeon X5492 but they have 120w and 150w requirement respectively, not to mention they might be too expensive.

Ahw I hoped HT was already a thing on 771, but oh well, I think I can do my things without... Anyways, I also need something affordable as I ofcourse need two of the same CPUs. Any other tips on good CPUs for VT on this socket? I just need something not too slow-ish, it doesn't have to be super amazingly fast.

Well most of the X54xx series will do the job, but you are most likely to be buying them second hand so you will have to explore the market unfortunately, as those are old CPUs and often you will see someone selling a better CPU for less than some else is selling a worse CPU.

Okay I will try to find any of those. As I said, I currently have a 5420. Altho I am thinking about either upgrading to 2x E5450 3.0GHz OR 2x E5462 2.8GHz. Which one would you choose?

Okay then I might do that . Thank you very much for your time :)
