I got a cheap, near-free old computer (Asus M3A78-EM MB with AMD Phenom II X3 8650) earlier this year that I first used for a music server but have replaced the old HTPC with it. Part of the reason is that the two older computers I have had a practical limit of 4 GB RAM while this computer can handle up to 8 GB (fully populated).
The CPU has a TPD of 95W and it does run quite a bit warmer than the C2D computer it replaced.
I'd like to switch to a lower TPD CPU but can't figure out if I need 1, 2, 3 or 4 cores. AMD has many 45W CPU offerings that are compatible but I'm not sure what I really need. The tasks the computer will be running (other than Win10) are a couple of torrent apps, video and maybe music playback.
45W choices (highest in class) are
Athlon
64 3800+
64 LE 1660+
II X2 250e
II X3 415e
II X4 610e
X2 5050e
X2 BE 2400
Sempron LE 1300
Graphics is driven by a 1030 card (4K) though the MB does have HDMI and DP out (not 4K obviously).
Have $5 EBay credit which must be used by year end.
