This probably has been asked a lot of times and I have been through a lot of posts but I still can't choose one. Should I get a x570 for future proofing or is the b450 enough? Can the B450 support overclocking for said CPU?
Also i'm on a pretty tight budget! So something not overly expensive please.

Alrighty! Thanks for the reply! Ill probably get the Tomahawk Max or the Pro Carbon AC
I considered both of those when I was looking for a B450 MB.
Those are both pretty good boards, just be aware that MSI doesn't have the best BIOS team around so it may be a while before they get a bug free BIOS released for either of those MB's.

Except for PCIe 4 there's no real advantage with x570 MBs except for best ones that cost much. Performance wise any b450MB would do. Overclocking 3700x is not practical nor it gains much with it. With latest BIOS with AGESA 1003 ABBA, it's quite capable of boosting past manual OC given proper cooling. As of lately MSI b450 Tomahawk Max is very popular with b450 MBs as it comes 3rd gen ready and with more advanced BIOS.
As a medium solution, most 470 MBs are good. My Asus Prime x470 pro is getting everything possible from my 3700x for instance.

Since the 3700x is a 65w CPU you can pretty much buy any board you like that supports 3rd gen Ryzen. Future proof is not a thing to worry about...buy the best tech you can afford today and enjoy it. Within 6 months anything you buy will most likely be obsolete anyway...GPUs are a prime example of this.

Take a look at this page and pick a good mid to high end quality board and enjoy https://i.redd.it/7n48gewun0p21.png

Ill check out the board you're using! Thanks for the reply!

I halfway expect X570's to fade away soon after B550 boards come available. But they are the only game in town when talking PCIe Gen4 right now. So if you're looking at one for 'future proofing' then the question is: will the PCIe Gen 4 devices be the future of PC's? Or just an expensive exercise in benchmarking as they are right now.

Many, if not most, B450's are very good for 3700X's... i'm running on right now on a B450M Mortar. But don't expect much from overclocking of any Ryzen 3000 on any motherboard.

Tomahawk Max seems to be the best for Ryzen 3000 since it was designed from scratch for it (as are all the MSI MAX boards). Honestly, I'd steer clear of Pro Carbon AC for a 3000... that because the MSI BIOS is so mussed up and may introduce lot more drama than you like in the whole upgrade process.

The only thing you'll be missing out on is the on-board WiFi and you can do better than that with a proper AIC WiFi card on the Tomahawk Max anyway. Put one of those slots to good use....that's what they make ATX for anyway, isn't it?

Yeah I already have a wifi card from my current build so ill just pop that over
