WHICH MONITOR DO YOU RECOMMEND FROM THESE?

Hi guys,
I'm going to buy an extra monitor to go with my existing Samsung 2232BW and I'm not sure which is the best one to go for.

Choices:

Way enough for anything else than Crysis. As for GTA IV, any 512mb card isn't able to run it with maximum setting due to the lack of memory. A damn joke resulting in poor optimization. Not normal that Crysis run better at max setting with my two 4850 OC... really not normal...
 
Go with the Samsung. Hands down. You're going to get a high resolution, better color, better customer support (if needed for whatever reason) and they are more reputable when it comes to LCD displays. I sold TV's for Circuit City for 2 years and Samsung was the best brand out there when it came to LCD televisions. After a while, I went to Best Buy and sold computers there. Yeah, Acer is a pretty big brand, but they're known more for their affordable notebooks...not their displays.

And when comparing the specs, don't let the contrast ration fool you. The Acer says to have 40000:1 and the Samsung is 1000:1. But here's a secret with aspect ratio's...there is no standard unit of measurement. Every company uses their own unit for measuring ratio's. So unless you are comparing apples to apples, or oranges to oranges, it's useless to look at.

The only "1 up" that I saw the Acer had over the Samsung is that it has a DVI port. I don't know if you're using VGA or whatever right now, but even without a DVI port on the monitor you can just get an adapter if you need to (which are literally like 50 cents). And about the 2ms and 5ms response time....that's so insignificant you won't even know.

Edit: Oh yeah, and about the BenQ...that company, from what I know, branched off of Acer and did its own little thing. They went through bankruptcy, changed names and a whole bunch of other stuff. Basically they're just like Acer (which is why I didn't really talk about them).
 
I would suggest getting a monitor with the same resolution. I do dual monitors with different resolutions and it drives me crazy because my mouse pointer gets stuck on the edge of the larger res when moving to the smaller res screen.
 
I'd go with the Samsung as well but only if it has 1:1 pixel mapping. If it doesn't, there's a similar monitor from Dell which i would recommend.

I've had good luck with Dell, Samsung, and LG monitors. I had only one issue with Samsung, i bought a t240 which ended up with some ugly backlight bleed. And it couldn't keep and aspect ratio. It worked great for my PC, sucked for my XBOX. So i sent it back, and bought my dell 24" s2409 on sale for $249 canadian down from $379.

So far from what i've seen from Acer, is meh. Nothing "bad," but nothing i'd consider spending my money on. I've seen better from BenQ.

I'd recommend a Dell unless you're only able to get one from the list you provided. Dell has weekly sales, and if you wait a bit you're bound to find a deal on a good monitor. In fact they have 3 monitors on sale ranging from 21.5" to 24" that i can see on the US site.

I didn’t tell you to get 30(2560x1600) monitor because your 2 x 4770's cannot handle this. Otherwise a 30`monitor is the best for gaming.
 


holy crap, i'm suprised you didn't tell him to upgrade to 2 x 4870x2 and 30" monitors
 
30" monitors are terrible and should be avoided by anyone with any taste for screen quality and common sense.

Get the BenQ, They make the highest quality monitors out of the ones you listed, Samsung has really gone down hill.
 
There is going to be a new 23" Full HD 1080P LCD Monitor coming out by ACER.

It is ACER H235Hbmid.

This monitor is going to have 100,000:1 Contrast Ratio which allows crisp and sharp image.

Its contrast ratio is 50% more than the recent LG W2253TQ-PF's 50,000:1!

You're kidding...Samsung hasn't gone down hill at all. What would even make you say that? Just because you own a BenQ and want him to buy one? Samsung is the world's largest manufacturer for LCD displays and last year their sales increased by 10%, with this year projected to increase even more. Last year they outsold Sony by $1.2 billion and their 3rd highest competitor by $2.7 billion.

Samsung has been #1 on the list for years and are STILL selling more then their previous years even with people not spending as much because of the economy. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Samsung and if it were me, I wouldn't even think twice about getting the Samsung over the Acer or BenQ.

Buy now, thank me later.

I agree with Lucius about Dell. I had the 1703 FP which gave me 5 hears of great service with high quality MVA panel. I recently upgraded to get a larger screen and purchased the 2209WA which has a fantastic eISP screen, again with a great quality image and no color distortion when viewed from angles - although only 1650x1080. The S2409W recently was on sale for the astounding price of $139(US) but two days ago went back up to $249. Like Luscius said, they regularly rotate the sale prices on monitors. The legendary Ultasharp 2408 WFP with MVA panel, which until recently was priced at $650, is now on sale for $449 - and a week for $399. I don't think I could ever use a TN panel again for my main screen.
 
Guys, thanks for the responses. I kind of wanted individual experience too, it's a quite a good gauge in my opinion.

Unfortunately, my wife has put the kybosh on me getting another monitor, due to lack of space (which I sort of have to agree with :??: ) It's a real bummer, because I would LOVE to have dual monitors but it's just not viable in the house we live in at the mo.

So, instead I invested in 2 x 64Gb Samsung SSD's, which should give me a good performance boost, with no space problems on my desk. So I did get a Samsung product in the end!

FWIW I would have bought the Samsung. I currently have a Samsung 2232BW and I like it + the Samsung I linked to had the highest res, which was something else I was after.

BUT THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED (except successful troll lol).

Now if anyone can tell me how I can get my RAID 0 SSD's to automatically back up data onto my 750Gb hdd at the end of each day, I would be HUGELY appreciative (the storage forum is v.quiet!)

I purchased a Dell 24" 1080p HD LCD Monitor and i've been very happy with it.

However, i've seen some of the Acer monitors and i think they looked really well also...

It's going to be a personal preference choice, so whichever manufacturer you feel good with is the one you should choose.

No, because I have compared almost a hundred monitors first hand and BenQ tends to be good for the price while Acer is simply cheap.



Your kidding right? Don't compare HDTVs to computer monitors as your comparing 10-bit panels to 6-bit panels. Also the reason I say Samsung has gone down hill recently is simply because the monitors are not up to their earlier standards. Did I say they were terrible? Bad? No I just commented that people should not recommend the new Samsung monitors because of the performance of their older monitors.

The absolute best monitor manufacturer is NEC, there are no better monitors. The more expensive Dell monitors tend to be high up there too, but some report problems that I have never noticed.

BenQ makes good monitors for the price. I am not recommending an LG Scarlet HDTV instead just because I own one. Please stop trolling and go away both of you.
 


Ummm, do some homework. Samsung is the world's leading seller for LCD monitors, as well as TV's. And I wasn't comparing the technology between the two, I was comparing the reputation of the companies based on sales over the past few years. Samsung has been the leading seller for LCD monitors for over 2 years, whereas other competitors don't even come close. Last fall Samsung accounted for over 20% of monitors sold globally for the entire year and the company is projecting to continue an increase in business for this year.

And you said in a previous post that BenQ was the highest quality out of the 3 monitors, but are now saying that they make good monitors for the price? Those two usually don't go hand in hand. Samsung is the highest quality out of the three hands down.

And even if we were talking about 10 and 8 bit panels, what would the big deal be? For an end user, there is practically no difference. Reason being there is no feed that would optimize the 10b processing. The only time that you would be using the 10b color depth is if you upscaled video and temporal/linear color scaling came into play. Other then that, you really have no difference.

So yeah, I believe for somebody that is simply wanting advice so they can have dual screen monitors for a few hundred bucks and isn't a multimillionaire who has million dollar cameras with a 3GBps signal, it would be okay for me to talk about 8 and 10 bit processing in the same conversation.

And FYI, I'm not trolling. I'm simply new to the community. I don't know too many trolls who try and help people and upload a picture of themselves onto their profile.

Yes BenQ is the highest quality out of the 3 listed, as they are all low end monitors.

Just because Samsung is popular, only because of their success with HDTVs and not the quality of their monitors, does not mean that they make the best products.

Bose makes some of the worst audio equipment on the market, but people still buy them and pay more over brands such as Swan, Polk, Audioengine, and others.

I have SEEN the BenQ and the Samsung monitor and I prefer the BenQ, Acer is in a lower category.

Please start looking between the lines of marketting, I can give you plenty of examples of extremely popular brands that do not perform as well as there competition. Also I never said Samsung was bad, just that the BenQ is better.
