Which Monitor will go well with my MSI Gtx 1080

Hello,

For my first PC build last December I got this monitor, https://m.newegg.com/products/N82E16824011066

And my GPU is
https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GTX-1080-GAMING-8G/dp/B01GLYD7MG?th=1&psc=1

I like it a lot but I didn't really do my research into how the quality of a monitor could affect my gaming experience, particularly with frame rates. All I really know is that the more Hz a monitor offers the better. So I'm thinking of getting a new monitor that can get me the best FPS at 1080 resolution and I was hoping somebody could recommend me a few if possible and briefly explain to me what to look for in these things to help me decide.

I am considering in playing at 1440 resolution sometime in the future, however as of right now I'm more interested in better FPS at 1080, so with that in mind, would getting a 1440 capable monitor be ok for 1080 resolution gaming if that makes sense? Ya once again I would appreciate any recommendations for a new monitor.

Solution

FreeSync not G-Sync and even a 1080 can't maintain a constant FPS above 144 at 1440p. If you get a fast monitor, you should get a G-Sync one.

These two are both g-sync, 1440p, 144hz and under 500.

This one is a pretty good gaming monitor.

27", 1440p, 144hz, 1ms response. Price is $445

This one has about the same features and specs but is 50 bucks more.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01H5KKVME/

Both are TN panels, which is how they get the 1ms response and the rest of the features for 500.
I think both these monitors are "too close to call". Both are very nice. I would pick the dell and save the $50 bucks.

Here is a list of alternatives

Sorry I shouldve clarified that earlier that I'm in the US. I am interested in 4k but as of right now I'm just looking for something that gives me the best fps and at better resolution if possible. Otherwise 1080 is fine for me, but after reading some of the posts, I guess i should for sure go for a 1440 monitor though i am a little worried about the decrease in fps.
I dont necessarily have a budget in mind as long it doesnt go to $500

Thank you for the suggestions, I am definitely going to be considering the two you linked in along with the other person's recommendation. If I may ask, you stated that a 1080 GPU will not be able to have a consistent FPS above 144Hz at 1440p. So if I am looking for the best FPS right now, should I instead stick with a 1080p monitor with a much higher refresh rate of 144Hz? Such as this one?

I play the Total War Strategy games and as of now my FPS for the newest game hovers around 80 FPS and I rather not see that get any lower.

I am just trying to explore all my options and make sure I have a good idea of what to expect of what I buy. Overall I am aware a lot of people would use 1440p 144Hz for a GPU like my own, but I would like to hear if you think it is worth it and again, if one should expect loss of FPS compared to a 1080 for example? I also read that G sync only works through a displayport and not through HDMI cable so how can I check if I have a display port on my computer?

I apologize for all the questions as I do hope to learn more, thanks for your help.

I assume you have a very strong CPU, hopefully it is i7 to push the GTX 1080. You can look up the specification of monitor and GPU to see what it comes with. Your old Acer has vga, hdmi and dvi. GTX 1080 will definitely has display port along with DVI and maybe HDMI. I recommend you go to youtube and type in your CPU/GTX1080, you should see what fps you will be expecting on 1080p and 1440p on video that people record to show fps on many games. It is much easier to actually see it rather than see what is typing in here.

If you care most about FPS, the fewer the pixels the better. I care more about image quality than FPS and so I use s 1440p. It sounds as if you would be happier with a 1080p. It is a matter of taste not science. I don't like 1080p. I also don't like small monitors or TN panels. Many many gamers disagree with me. Neither I nor they are wrong. I would suggest you go to a shop like Fry's and look at a couple. Compare the IPS viewing angles and decide if the typical slightly slower response is worth the better viewing angles and better color. Again this is subjective (your taste not mine should decide what is right for you).

Depending on which 1080 you have, there might be some overclocking headroom to be had to raise your cards performance. Similarly if you have something like an AMD FX processor, an upgrade to an Intel coffeelake would also boost FPS some.

For now, you are gaming at 80fps on a 60 hz panel. This is not good. You should turn on fast-sync in your nvidia driver control panel to cap FPS to your refresh rate (so cap it to 60). Above 60 on your current monitor is pointless as it won't be displayed and will lead to tearing.

You are correct that g-sync means DP. Every gtx 1080 has a displayport. Every g-sync monitor has displayport. Nothing to worry about there.

The monitor you linked to did not have g-sync. You already see that you can't hit 144fps in most games. G-sync is almost essential on a fast monitor unless you are planning to run it at a lower refresh rate (at which point, I have to wonder why get a fast refresh rate monitor).

Here is a list of monitors with g-sync. Various sizes, refresh rates and so forth.

Thanks again for all your help. I believe I am going to go for a 1440p monitor after all. It seems that for the long term it would serve me best to get a 1440p monitor and eventually upgrade my PC to fully utilize it instead of sticking with another 1080p and eventually buying a different display as I upgrade my PC. If I do get really bothered by the FPS drop,
I plan to try and switch the resolution to 1080p and figure out how to shrink the game window so it won't look too stretched out as it does not look good, according to what I hear about playing 1080p on 1440p. Of course that would only be temporary at times as there's no point playing at that resolution with a monitor like that.

By any chance do you know if there is any real difference between dell monitors, acers or asus monitors? Same exact specs just different brand? For example, any difference between these two?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N11QIYW/ref=psdc_1292115011_t3_B01H5KKVME

and the one you linked, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0149QBOF0/ref=olp_product_details?_encoding=UTF8&me=

As I was looking for different 1440p 144hz gysync and 1080p 144hz gsync monitors, I also could not help but wonder why there is only about a price difference of less than $100 between two identical monitors with the cheaper one being lower resolution of 1080p and the other 1440p. Just seems a little odd that the prices of some 1080 monitors with exact same specs come fairly close to that of a 1440p monitor. Once again thanks for your time and advice, it has helped me a lot.

Yes I currently have a i7 6700k skylake, and it appears that after watching some videos and benchmarks between the two resolutions, I'll be going for a 1440p monitor. I just thought it would be best for me in the long run as I do see myself keeping a monitor much longer than say a cpu or gpu overall. If anything I might downgrade the resolution back to 1080p only on one or two games just for the fps. Hopefully by then I also find a way to decrease that "blur" effect that people seem to talk about when playing 1080p on a 1440p monitor. Maybe try having those black bars around the screen the decrease the window size? I plan to get one of these two.

I'm simply assuming that they are much more expensive due to the g sync and of course the 144hz and the size.
Thanks for your help,I really appreciate it.

Dell has S2716DG for $399. Best Buy has S2716DGR for $399. Someone on Slickdeals forum say R stand for retail sell. Both are $120 less than Amazon just in case use decide on this model.
