Which motherboard for Phenom 9550 CAD system?

Hello all,

I bought an HP a6720y desktop from Best Buy last week with the plan on downgrading the OS to XP so I can run CAD on it. Unfortunately I get the blue screen of death when trying to load XP.

So now I am reviewing my options.

Option 1) I could replace the motherboard with something that would work with XP, and the existing Phenom X4 9550 chip.

Option 2) I could take it back, take the hit on the restocking fee, and buy an XP compatible system

The most important considerations are speed and the ability to run Windows XP.

Any suggestions would be appreciated...

How much did you pay for the system? What CAD application will you be using?

You should be able to run XP on your system...there may be some other problem that is causing the blue screen. I would call up HP and inquire about it.

The system was about $600. I run myriad CAD systems, a couple of which are still mired in the XP world.

We contacted HP this morning, and they want to do a repair on it... We got an RMA and will be returning it to the store today.

Then I'll get the same hardware you have, since there are XP drivers available. The P6T and the i7 920.
