Hey Folks,
I've been sandbagging around here for a few years now. I know there's a lot of good advice given here cause I read it all the time. I'm finally going to ask one.

I'm doing a build;d for a friend. I had him buy all the parts on sale during the holidays. His budget was 1500 and here's what we came up with.
Rosewill Thor V2 Case
INTEL i7 4790K
Cooler Master Nepton 140XL
Gigabyte GTX 750 Ti
EVGA SuperNOVA 750 PSU
G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series DDR3 1600 16GB (4 x 4GB)
LG Black Blu-ray Burner
SAMSUNG 850 Pro Series 256GB SSD
Western Digital 3TB HDD
He also picked up Windows 8.1 / a 23" LED Monitor and a couple of 230mm LED fans to replace the top and side fans in the Thor.

Now the motherboard questiom. He picked up the MSI Z97 Gaming 3 board on sale. Now even though it has the newer chipset, its not the greatest board for overclocking and some really don't like MSI boards.
I also have an ASUS Maximus Vi Hero board sitting right here that I can use instead. People rave about the overclocking with this board but it is a Z87 express chipset.

Any opinions on which board we should go with?

Mother boards do not have crucial differences between one or the other, an older chipset will work just fine, the Maximus VI Hero is a very reliable and stable board with great overclocking capabilities, on the other hand the MSI is a bit newer. I would personally go with the Hero, but I have friends with both types of boards and none of them have ever complained about it breaking or failing, or not being able to overclock so the choice is really up to you.
