currently i keep avi/mkv etc etc on my laptop and when i want to watch them i use pytivo and pull them from the laptop to the tivo. this always gives me instant access and the shows/movies start right away so i'm happy.

i'm in the market for new backup drives ( will be going raid 1) and started researching synology then ran into readynas.

i have no desire to archive from the tivo to the NAS but i do know that the readynas will do it for sure based on my reading. however, is it possible to keep the avi/mkv on the NAS (do i need a specific brand) and have it encoded while it's being transferred to the tivo? is there a way to put pytivo on the NAS is the real question. or perhaps some other kind of encoding program?

if that answer is no, then can i just encode video files to the native tivo mp4 then put the files on NAS and then pull from tivo. basically trying to unload all video from my laptop to NAS.
thanks

EDIT: i rarely plug in my laptop to ethernet. can i use the NAS through my routers wifi? i usually setup full backups for weekends and do plug it in then for the speed. but during the week i dont need that speed.

I'm not familiar with the software you're using, but I know that real time transcodes need a decent amount of cpu or support for hardware transcodes.
One reference is this plex recommendation of 2k passmark per 1080p transcode. Their suggestion may not be starting from a RAW format.
I've found that it's much cheaper to build out a NAS than buy one with decent passmark. You could potentially do it not real time. I'd take a look at the passmark of the NAS. The 5W cpu some of those have don't have a lot of power. If it can hardware transcode using the intel chip it would likely be pretty decent.

You may be able to put wifi on a NAS. I wouldn't recommend it. Just plug it in near your router and wire it. I'd strongly suggest trying to get the recording device wired.

external drives are always wired

my laptop is not always wired. just wireless. so wanted to make sure thats no issue. when i do full backups its on the weekend and i plug in laptop and let it go all day. but because of the orientation of the plug i cannot keep the ethernet on the laptop 24 7 because how it would be against the side of the sofa is awkward.

ive been researching and this is the readynas https://www.netgear.com/support/product/RN422

its very clear from that manual that if you have stuff on tivo it will archive to NAS and then you can put it back on tivo but i'm unclear if i can put my own avi/mkv etc on the NAS and pull it from the tivo. that is the critical question i need to know the answer.
