Question Which one is better? Core i5 or xeon E3.

Hi,
I want to ask which one is good for programming and reading ebooks :
Core i5 or xeon E3.

I m going to buy desktop CPU either from dell or hp, so I need to make a decision between these two since core i7 is very expensive.
Any further suggestions will be appreciated.

Impossible to answer without know which i5 and which Xeon, also the rest of the system matters quite a bit too

8 GB ram
No SSD, just normal internal hard disk 1 TB.
No graphic card.

Which Xeon e3? That isn't nearly as specific as I suspect you think it is

Its xeon E3 1225 v5 with Intel HD graphics P530.
Chipset Intel c236.
This is the specifications of HP Z238 microtower workstation.

Q1: Should I prefer core i5 8th generation over core i7 7th generation? Or core i7 7700k is better than core i5 8th generation?
Q2: core i7 7th generation is better than xeon E3 1225 v5?

I5 8 gen > i7 7 gen > xeon e3-1225 v5.

There no big difference between 2/3 gen and 7 gen intel cpus. When ryzen comes, intel releases more powerfull 8 gen cpu line, 8 gen i5 is better than i7 7gen, it has 6 cores real cores vs 4 cores(8threads), better cache, power consumption, etc. Xeon not equal to xeon. E3-1225 v5 is about 7 gen i5 level.
