Which one of these HDD's is the better option (Seagate, WD, Toshiba)

Hi Guys,

I am looking to get a new HDD for my PC and I am stuck between 3 options.

1. Toshiba P300 2TB - $73.03

2.WD Blue WD10EZEX 1TB - $53.81

3. Seagate ST1000DM003 1TB - $51.51

I am leaning more towards the Toshiba as it is a 2Tb and about $20 more for an extra 1TB compared to the others.

Now I would like to know is the Toshiba good compared to the other two HDD's?

I have had a 3TB Barracuda crash on me as well as a 4TB WD drive so I have had bad experiences with both but don't know the Toshiba HDD's.

I will use it for my games and movies etc.

I to agree with going bigger HDD. I have a Toshiba 3tb and love the space. The WD Blues are solid, although 1 of mine died (in warranty), out of 3. If you only need 1tb then WD. If you might need more and want to backup SSD/HDD then 2tb Toshiba.

If it's any help in making your decision - - avoid Seagate. I've had bad experiences with every Seagate HDD I've owned - - 6 of them in total, all failed within 18 months. That can't be just a coincidence - - now I never buy that brand, always WD ones for me.

I've only owned 1 Toshiba HDD and that failed within 2 years, although since it was the only one I've bought, could just have been bad luck with that particular drive. I certainly wouldn't slate Toshiba drives just because I had a bad one.

When it comes to mechanical drives, I always go WD. I used to praise Seagate as well, back in the pre-maxtor days. I'd stay clear of them now. I once had a WD drive fail on me. I ran their RMA tool and had it replaced no problem. Yes it was only a 1GB drive, which just goes to show how long it's been since I've seen one fail. Seagate on the other hand, failed completely. My 1TB seagate wouldn't pass any harddrive test from multiple sources..... except for seagate's own tool. They refused to replace the dead drive. The easier RMA process alone would make me trust WD over seagate any day.

I haven't owned a Toshiba in over 10 years, but I have nothing against them. It's a much better price per GB and if you're just going for storage then I'd go ahead and get it. But honestly, you can get a 1TB WD Black for the same price. Which if you're willing to spend $70 anyway then I'd definitely do that.

I'd avoid that seagate (old models anyway). Those older models were not reliable at all and suffer a lot of failures. Their new models however have a lot of new technology and thus far have shown far less failures. I swear by Seagate enterprise drives in server builds and definitely wouldn't hesitate to buy their new model barracuda, NAS, firecuda or barracuda pro for desktops. Just dodge the old models.

WD Blues are slow! Reliable, yes, but slow. Personally I dodge WD at pretty much every corner since there's better bang for your buck all over.

I've personally installed over 50 Toshiba P300s, both 2TB and 3TB, over the last year or so and they've been rock solid. I run every one through a long drive test in Seatools upon receipt to make sure they're clean and they actually go in RAID-5 arrays off LSI RAID cards in my builds. Out of all I've received I've only RMA'd one and it had actually passed the drive test but was making a very slight whining noise I hadn't heard in others so I RMA'd for the heck of it. These drives take a beating in these builds and not one failure so far. They're also fast (190-200MB/s).

If you do decide to go with Seagate, we think it's a better bet to go with more recent models, as our engineers are always striving to create the best drives on the market, and the newer the drive, the better warranty protection in general. It depends on where you're buying from, but just a quick search on Amazon (US site) showed a current model of our 2TB Seagate that is in line with the price of the 2TB product you mentioned. Try looking around a little for model ST2000DM006.
