I'm going to build a pc with a gtx 1070 and an i7 6700k, and I want to game in 1440p. However, the tests ive seen done only manage to get the FPS in the 60-100 range (depending on what game). Im planning on getting a 144 hz monitor, and i have a few questions. In your opinion, should i:
A.) get the 1440p, 144hz monitor and just deal with minimal screen tearing because of not even being able to hit 100 fps in most recent games in 1440p
B.) stick with 1080p on the gtx 1070, get a 1080p 144hz monitor so i will just hit 144 fps no problem
C.) Stick with 1440p on the gtx 1070, but shell out a few hundred more dollars for a 144hz monitor with the G-Sync feature so i can eliminate screen tearing problems
D.) Instead of shelling out a few more hundred for a monitor with G-sync, instead buy a gtx 1080 so that i'll be able to hit closer to that 144fps mark when playing in 1440p

sorry if this question is all over the place, its hard to word well for me. Basically, i want to game in 1440p but it will only hit 60-100 fps, so im wondering if i should either buy a more expensive monitor with G-Sync to sync the framerate to refresh rate, or if i should just buy a gtx 1080 to hit the higher framerates. Or if i should just ditch 1440p and get a 1080p monitor so that a gtx 1070 will hit 144fps no problem

I have a 6700k, GTX 1070 and 1080p 144hz monitor and believe me even this doesn't hit 144 fps on AAA titles. And honestly if you want the high refresh rate monitor I assume that you are interested in competitive games. If thats the case don't even bother with 1440p since your eye just won't recognize that it is better than 1080p in a short time. I don't think 4k 144hz is not going to happen in next 1-2 generations of GPU's still so maybe you should use up your 1080p 144hz monitor and 1070's lifetime until that is the mainstream like 1080p 60hz is today.
I went through the same dilemma a few months ago. you will be above 100FPS in many games where 100+ FPS matter.
in AAA titles were staying around 60 is more important, the GTX1070 will be able to hit that, no problems! remember that AntiAliasing (AA) is not that necessary at 1440p, there for you could get some extra FPS disabling it or going x4/AA.

as for the future, I prefer investing more on the monitor than the rest of the components, so I went with a 144HZ/Gsync 1440p IPS panel. when the GTX1070 starts showing its age, I will be able to take advantage of Gsync to give it more useful life. the monitor usually outlasts at least 2 builds. I don't regret my decision at all, I'm having the best gaming experience of my life.

If you want to drive a 144Hz monitor you'll need not one, but two 1070s (that's if you want steady 144 FPS and decent settings), also you see a lot of CPU bottlenecks in 144 Hz setups, so you'll need a decent motherboard to overclock that CPU. With most games being released half baked nowadays i'd just stick with a 1440p 60Hz monitor and a 1070.

I actually limit my FPS to 143 for overwatch and Rocket league in order not hit 144hz. twitch/fps titles are easy to hit that target and high FPS are desired for those games. you don't need 100FPS in Witcher3.... a GTX1070 is good enough for 1440p/144hz/ultra settings with all bells and whistles.

the thing is, my next upgrade will probably be the jump to 4K in a few years, when 4k 144hz monitors are out and the gpus can handle them okay. SO im not sure if its worth it splurging on a monitor with G-Sync, versus saving ~300$ and going with one without g-sync.
I also see that games like fallout 4 and forza horizon 3 only get 45-60 fps on ultra 1440p, so tahts why i wanna know if i should get a 1080

4K 144Hz monitors are being designed and one of them announced soon. will probably cost you an arm and a leg and will require 2x DisplayPort cables to handle the bandwidth.

meanwhile, we don't even have a 4K60FPS capable GPU. it will still take some time, keep waiting then....

im basically deciding whether i should spend extra on g-sync, or if i should use that money instead on a gtx 1080, or if i should save up longer and get both.

what are you talking about? Fallout 4 benchmarks show a GTX1070 doing 85FPS on 1440p (http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/nvidia-geforce-gtx-1070-review,19.html )
67 FPS on 1440p for Forza Horizon 3.

you were talking about 4K 144Hz monitors and now you don't want to spend extra on Gsync? a GTX1070 makes more sense at the moment, better value/performance than the 1080 and not that different.
