I have an i5 4660 on an Intel D85FL, motherboard with 4GB. Should I use Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8.1 Pro for a better performance.

Karl seems as if he's giving a biased answer.

Honestly, either OS is perfectly fine. I have an i5 CPU and I use Windows 7 however and it works like a dream. No complaints whatsoever. Considering the rest of your components though, I'd opt for Windows 7.

Main reason im saying it that UEFI is more supported and infact encouraged in windows 8 (http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/secure-boot-vs-restricted-boot/about) See that link to find out why i strongly discourage UEFI

To quote the article: "Microsoft has announced that if computer makers wish to distribute machines with the Windows 8 compatibility logo, they will have to implement a measure called "Secure Boot.""

This means that consumers only need to worry about this if purchasing a computer from a manufacturer that preloads the OS onto the build themselves. IE: Dell, Asus, Lenovo, HP, etc...

If the user builds the computer themselves however, they still have complete control over this and there's nothing to worry about.
