What is your budget?

Some games are graphics limited like fast action shooters.
Others are cpu core speed limited like strategy, sims, and mmo.

Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
This makes the graphics card loaf a bit.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

To some extent, single channel ram is hurting your cpu performance.
You could buy a 2 x 8gb ram upgrade for about $75.
I don't know that it is a good idea to invest more in an old platform.

In general, one of the most satisfying performance upgrades is to put windows C drive on a ssd.
Not so much for games as for...

Not so much for games as for overall quickness of your pc.
A 1tb samsung 860/870 QVO will cost about $110.
Conversion is trivial using their ssd migration app.
A ssd can be carried forward to a new build in the future.

What is the make/model of your psu?
If you need a graphics upgrade, that is what limits your options.

If you need a cpu upgrade, the strongest processor your motherboard supports would be a i7-7700K.
It still sells for $300 used on ebay. Likely, not a good option.

For $250 or so, you can buy a stronger 8 thread i3-10100 processor, a new motherboard and 16gb of ddr4 ram. I might go even stronger if budget permits.
