Which power Supply to get

Sep 4, 2011
Hi Everyone,

I am currently having issues with my video card (getting BSOD on Win 7, with the message referencing ATIPMAG.sys).

Someone mentioned that it could be my power supply & I had thought about getting a new power supply because I want a modular one anyways.

I currently have an Antec EA-650 650W. I am trying to figure out which power supply to get, thats around $100-$130 range (if not cheaper), that is full modular.

My setup:

I7 2600k
Asrock Exteme 3 Gen 3
4 - 4gig 1333mhz DDR3
4 - 7200Rpm Sata HD
ATI Radeon 6850
Lite on Blu ray burner

Have you checked your System Event log to see what error you receive on reboot? Modified Windows to give you a BSOD vice auto shutdown/reboot? This could easily be driver issues among a to of other things.

Modify the restart behavior for the computer. To do this, follow these steps:
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- Click Advanced system settings.
- Click the Advanced tab.
- In the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings.
- Click to clear the Automatically restart check box.

This will let you get the BSOD when your computer reboots/shuts down. To check for errors on previous shut downs you can check the system event log:
- Click the Start button .
- In the Search box, type Event Viewer and hit enter
- In the list of results, double-click Event Viewer.

I believe it has to do with the driver (BSOD refrences Atipmag.sys), but a few others mentioned it might be a power supply issue. Not to also mention I had been thinking of getting a modular PS anyways, so i could have less cables inside of my case.

I can say that I have tried Windows reinstalls, uninstalled/reinstalled different version of the ATI drivers, & driver sweeper & still get the same issue.

@ Johnny: It's not that low end of a PSU...9+ at JohnnyGuru: http://www.jonnyguru.com/modules.php?name=NDReviews&op=Story&reid=110

It's way overkill for his system as is any 600W+ PSU...that rig can be run on a good quality 450W PSU. THG used the Antec EA-380D with a similar build in their recent "Value Build" article, but they didn't have anywhere near that many HDD/ODDs and the CPU was an i3-2120.

Chol: If you want to upgrade to go modular, then that's your prerogative. I'm not sure how many cables you would be able to not install with the amount of devices in your rig, though....something you should consider before dropping the money on modular. I wouldn't expect it to fix your issue, especially with that type of BSOD error...but anything's possible.
