Question Which processor would be better for editing/rendering?

i5 9600k vs Ryzen 7 3700x
I want to game and my dad wants to use the PC to edit videos. Which would be better than the other, and is it a significant difference (when it comes to editing)? The price difference is $100 and would like to know if it’s even worth it. Thanks!

For games, it's not a huge difference under 6 threads, but for your dad, the 3700X will make more sense for him.

For multiple player online games, like 24man Boss fights or 64man raids etc, where 8 or more threads are in continual, massive use, the 3700x will blow the doors off the 9600k. For CSGO, which uses 2-3 threads, cheap is good.

It'll cost you $50 to guarantee same-ish or better results over the entire spectrum of game demands, and cost your dad $50 to save time on his needs. That's $1 a month for the next 4 years. Can you handle that cost?

The 3700x will destroy the 9600k in most video editing and rendering workloads. Without a doubt.

If you want cheaper, you could buy a Ryzen 5 3600 which still beats a 9600k for editing and rendering.

Remember, the 99600k needs a cooler as it doesn't include one.

The best value processor by far is the Core i7-8700K. It has 6 cores and 12 threads and its high turbo clock speed of 4.7GHz offers good performance for video editing. Just to add in platform cost.

Ryzen 5 3600 can be overclocked on B450 motherboards starting at around $60. There are currently 2 B450 boards available for $59.99 on PCPP.

The Intel Core I7 8700k needs a Z series motherboard to be overclocked and Z390s start at over $100.

Not to mention the 8700k chucks out a lot more heat than the 3600 while both need a beefy cooler for overclocking, the Ryzen 5 3600 can get buy with a far cheaper cooler.
