16GB of RAM is a bit of overkill - the 8GB kit from GSKILL is about $75 on average - by not getting the combo deal, you can save a few bucks by just buying the GSKILL ram separately....

I do use 16GB on my main desktop (I use Adobe Photoshop which utilizes the RAM - but most apps 8GB is plenty).

well its a combo, the i5 4690k and the G.SKILL for $354, i had the team zeus picked out on "partpicker.com" for $ 69.99 and the i5 for 209.99 69.99 so there'll bout $80 difference, but if its better then i'll take it

im going to be running games like far cry 4, DA:i and witcher 3 and 4... and the required for far cry 4 is like 8gb

I don't think you can ever have "too much" RAM or storage space - but your wallet is always going to have a limit. 8GB is my standard PC install, 16GB is my "power user" install....servers I have installed up to 128GB (they use a lot more RAM). Photoshop can use as much RAM as you can throw at it, but if you only use 8GB or 16GB 99% of the time, why do you need the extra memory?

what if i got 12gb? is that a thing? like i barely hear people talking bout them.. is there anything bad about those?

If I were you, I would go with 8GB, and monitor your RAM usage with task manager. If you are maxing out (close to 100% often), you can purchase the additional 8GB. 95% of the time, I am between 4GB and 6GB usage.....my wife runs about the same on her computers. Only when I load up photoshop with large pictures or multiple pictures (usually 5-10) do I start to see RAM usage in the 10-12GB range.
