Which RAM would you choose and why?

both have the same speed but gskill is faster due to lower cl timings what mobo do you have? you may not be able to run them at such speeds.most x58 chipset support such speeds though! make sure you have the latest bios.also due to triple channel memory controller of your cpu-mobo you need 3 x ddr3 sticks kit to make the most out of it!

I guess I should let you know this is a gaming computer. I bought the i7 to future proof the rig, but here we are in the future and I'm still not really taking advantage of hyperthreading. My current 8 gigs is all used up because I multibox 4 accounts on a game. All the posts I've read thus far says that sticking to 2 sticks of memory is best for gaming which is why I was adament on 2x 8 sticks. More than 2 sticks starts to slow it down (what I've read). I'm just taking the most common info at face value without understanding the real difference between memory setups. 16 gigs is more than enough to last me till my next build, which is why I'm trying the get the best 2 sticks of memory that my mobo will support. Does that reasoning help at all?

I really appreciate all the help btw. I know it can be a pain in the ass explaining this stuff to someone. I just haven't looked at this stuff in a very long time, so I'm currently just googling a lot of info and assuming the most commonly posted thing is true. All these threads I've read so far lead me to assume the owners can only run dual channel so their info is obviously bias. Is there any true advantage to running a triple parallel setup @ 12 gigs of my current memory versus one the the two choices above in dual channel?

well, your chipset mobo x58 is the only one ever to have triple channell memory controller. most of all (intel and amd) chipsets have dual and only intel x79 has quad channel.there isnt any drawback running more than 2x sticks. since you are a gamer 8gb is plenty for any current game.12gb is still overkill. i suggest you grab another 4gb stick to properly utilise your hardware.you will be running a new pc when games will demand more than 12gb!:)

Yeah I think 12 gigs will give me a safe buffer for a while... The only reason I use so much RAM is because I run 4x game clients at the same time. I use over 90% of 8 gigs at some periods of play, which is why I was looking to upgrade some. Thanks again for the help.

yes, i see, i suppose another 4gb will allow another client! and boost things a bit(make sure you get an even match though)...and no worries, you are welcome!

yes thats true sadly, cl timmings of lower than 9 those days were more of premium category and now, no longer come on only 1x4gb. i would get the cl9 model, you wont be losing anything on real world performance and gaming, you would see minor difference only on benchmarking.the mobo will automatically set all memory sticks to matching timings.

With X58 and 24GB max that is 6x4GB, there are few if any X58 mobos that support 8GB sticks...Might look at a 3x4GB or even 4x4GB stick set, might look at the GSkill F3-14900CL9Q-16GBZL 1866/9 4x4GB Ripjaws Z, I've run those on the Asus X58 Sabertooth, full dual mode
