Which should i buy? i5 8400 z370 for ( $400) or my friend's used R7 1700 X370 for ($450)?

Hey guys i just want to ask you since i'm planning on upgrading my computer. Starting from scratch. Which would be the better option? I mainly do gaming but i do render some videos from time to time on my youtube channel and I'm not sure which should i get. I'm currently using an i7 3770 16gb DDR3 ram gtx 1070. And i'm planning to keep my 1070 though. I'm gonna be giving my old pc to my brother so he can also make use of it.

yea i was thinking the same thing. It'd provide more future proof aswell maybe. I don't intend on upgrading my pc for 4-6 years. I think it's the CPU that's getting more and more demanding on the new games

Get the 1700 imo. I've got the r5 1600 and am happy with it. Overclocked to 3.7ghz.

The i5 8400 beats the r7 1700 in gaming, in fact it beats all ryzen 3s and 5s and some 7s so if your mainly just gaming then the i5 8400 is your best bet, yes it says its only 2.8Ghz but it auto turbos to 3.8GHz 90% of the time

Guess this is an older topic now, i5 is a fine chip, but now I would go 2600/2600x or 2700/2700x. Better single core performance than 1st gen ryzen, and better multithreaded performance than the i5. i5 today is slightly ahead in games, but as more games become multihreaded, the ryzen may cope better. If you are running a mid range video card, you probably won't see a difference.

I agree with you there but he stated he mainly games thats why i suggested the i5 8400 as it beats every ryzen up to ryzen 7 2700x in gaming but most ryzens beat the i5 8400 in rendering and other things, yes it does depend on GPU, i currently have a 1070 8gb and i only game on my pc and it does the job 95% of games i get 90+ fps on ultra settings, But like i said i only suggested the i5 as it beats all ryzens in gaming and thats what the person said he mainly does.

Yeah, technically the Intel is better for that specific use. No argument. But the thing to think, games that are taking advantage of more than 4 cores, what does that look like in say 2 years? I'll aware the 8400 is a 6 core. But just saying in a couple of years, say Battlefield 10 comes out, will it then be enough.

Yeah thats true but bare in mind intel always has much faster single core performance than the ryzen so when your looking at a game thats hungry for 8 cores the i5 will still be better as its faster single core performance than say the ryzen7 8core, i currently play Pubg which core hungry and ive seen the benchmarks on that i5 vs ryzen 7 and the i5 wins by like 10 frames but yeah i understand what your saying.

Yep. I understand what you are saying. I think when I looked at the recent benchmarks, the Ryzen is maybe only 5-10% behind intel now. Not like it sued to be. Come next year, AMD is supposed to bring out the Ryzen 3000 series. I think that will be interesting, I believe they are doing a die shrink to 7nm, plus any architecture improvements. So they already beat intel in multi thread, I think it will be interesting to see if they overtake or get even with intel.
