Hi everyone and thanks for this useful forum.

I had just installed XP on my system and after installing some software from my external hard drive i realized that something went wrong with the install so i decided to reinstall the os. I forgot to swicht off my external hard drive and when windows loaded all the files and asked me where did i wanted to install xp and all that, both drives appeared, my internal hd and the external with all my data. i was doing something else at the same time and i wasn't paying all the attention i should have so i deleted the partition of my firewire Hd and just after i did it i realized my mistake. The file system for that drive is fat32 and there was only one partition. I did not formatted the ext. drive, i only deleted the partition.

My question is, which software would be the best (fastest, easier to operate, most percentage of data recovered...) to recover my data?

Is it easy enough or should i go to a specialist?

Thanks in advance for your help!! :)

Hi,

Lost or deleted partition can be saved using Partition Table Doctor Recovery tool.
It can easily restore lost partition, as it did for me before.

Really great tool, with awesome restore algorithms. Give it a try. Recommended!

I have used TestDisk to recover partition table on both Linux and WIndows systems;
it is freedomware (GPL) and very easy to use. Highly recommended:

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

# ----------------------------------------------------------
"TestDisk is OpenSource software and is licensed under the terms of the GNU Public License (GPL).

TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

TestDisk can

* Fix partition table, recover deleted partition
* Recover FAT32 boot sector from its backup
* Rebuild FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector
* Fix FAT tables
* Rebuild NTFS boot sector
* Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup
* Fix MFT using MFT mirror
* Locate ext2/ext3 Backup SuperBlock
* Undelete files from FAT, NTFS and ext2 filesystem
* Copy files from deleted FAT, NTFS and ext2/ext3 partitions.

TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. For those who know little or nothing about data recovery techniques, TestDisk can be used to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can then be sent to a tech for further analysis. Those more familiar with such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool in performing onsite recovery. "

Since you just deleted the partition without doing any other operations, there is a detailed guide for you to recover your deleted partition in a few seconds.

http://www.ptdd.com/recoverdeletedpartition.htm

By the way, it can also solve the problem that you cannot entrance the partition or any other boot sector problem like the Windows ask you to format the partition.

Hello

I have done the exact same thing as you. A really stupid but yet mistake I left my external drive plugged in and rebuilt the PC. I am still kicking my self for not disconnecting the external drive. I have used testdisk to recover the partition.
I cant remember all the steps, it was not user friendly but I have safely restored the partition with out loss of data.

This is open source software so its free. If you want to leave a donation when complete you can.

I just used Partition Table Doctor Recovery tool ( ^ as suggested in this thread).

And it DIDN'T WORK!! :pfff:

[RANT]

I know I know, I'm the sucker for deleting my external hard drive partition.

I feel really stupid, but.. two weeks ago, my "main" hard drive and laptop were stolen. Theifs I tell you :non: . My "main" hard drive, as I call it, is where I download stuff to, before I copy it to my computer. Its also my weekly back-up hard drive.

Well, thankfully I'm brilliant (so I thought). I have another external hard drive I keep stored in a safe, in the basement. I had a lot of my data collected over the years stored on this hard drive just in case their was a fire, or... hugghhh someone stills my stuff.

Yeappe right? Even though I didn't have everything backed up on my "basement" hard drive, I at least didn't loose 6+ years of data.

So life moves on, I buy a new laptop.. and BANG, the most stupidest thing happens. I accidentally deleted my external hard drive partition. Can you believe it? EVERYTHING is gone. :heink:

[/RANT]

I need some help, both personally and help with my computer. Partition Table Doctor Recovery tool doesn't seem to work for me.

The program looked to work at first; it recognized my data and "recovered" it, until I noticed that all my documents are there, but there are no "text" when I open them. My music files are recognized, but look to be corrupted. My PDF files do not work...

Am I out of luck? :(
