Hey guys, I am looking @ 2 SSD options at the moment. One is used and one is new. Both look to be great deals.

Option 1)
SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC256D/AM 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
Specs here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147135
Price: $65 CDN

Option 2)
Kingston SSDNow UV400 2.5" 240GB SATA III TLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SUV400S37/240G
Specs here: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820242258&cm_re=kingston_ssd-_-20-242-258-_-Product
Price: $80 CDN

The Samsung is cheaper but it is older. I think it is also slower? Samsung has 256GB while Kingston has 240 GB. Not a big difference but a difference.

The Samsung is also used and without warranty, but looks to be a really reliable card.
The Kingston would be brand new.

THANKS!

The Samsung is the better, more reliable drive. Although used storage, with no warranty/no transferrable warranty, I'd recommend you avoid.

If you're looking for an SSD on a budget, I've found the A-Data S511's to be pretty reliable drives. 3 year warranty, and includes cloning software (although I'd recommend a clean install). At $58, you can't really go wrong. Not the fastest, but will be noticeable over an HDD.

If this is your first SSD, the A-Data one will be fine.

If it's simply between the two you mentioned, there's pro's & con's for each. The Samsung is the better drive, despite being older. But no warranty may well be a jusifiable reason to avoid.

Just throwing the A-Data drive out there as an alternative.

Thanks for the replies. The Samsungs do seem to have a reputation for reliability. But the Kingston comes with a 3 year warranty. And Samsung is a 2011 SSD. Tough call on that one.

I read that article and it scares me that the Kingston might not be as fast as benchmarked. However that was for the V300 and this is a UV400 that has newer components. Still there is the potential they will do it again.

I was going through some Reviews and seeing some benchmarks. It does seem like the UV400 benchmarks higher than the Samsung 830 however.

Man tough call!

Question for everyone. I keep hearing that Samsung 830 is the better drive. While I don't doubt that Samsung has the edge in reliability, what gives that 5 year old SSD the edge in performance? I've looked through reviews on both and the benchmarks in the reviews show the Kingston winning in pretty much every category. Is it a matter of real world performance vs benchmarks? Is there a way to check real world performance?
