I apologize as i'm not altogether too familiar with the new M.2 storage on motherboards. I have two rigs. One with a ASUS PRIME Z90-P and one with an ASROCK 7Z90 Steel Series. Both currently have one M2 NVME SSD. I would like to add another SSD to both rigs.

Z790-P has this:
M.2_1 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280/22110 (supports PCIe 4.0 x4 mode)
Intel® Z790 Chipset
M.2_2 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280 (supports PCIe 4.0 x4 mode)
M.2_3 slot (Key M), type 2242/2260/2280/22110 (supports PCIe 4.0 x4 & SATA modes)

ASROCK Z690 has this:
  • 12 Hyper M.2 (PCIe Gen4 x4)
    1 Ultra M.2 (PCIe Gen3 x4 & SATA3)

Can I just order another M.2 SSD for both?

any gen 4 drive would be fine for either mobo.

note that the ASRock board's second slot will only run at gen 3 speeds. but real world you won't even know the difference.

usually comes down to price/size. if gen 4 is same price or barely more, then go for it. if you find a great deal on gen 3 ssd, then grab it while its hot.
