Hi. I'm new here, sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I'm also new to gaming PCs, which is what this question is about. I want to buy a prebuilt gaming rig. I don't want to build one myself as I don't have the know-how or the time or the interest. I'm looking at the following two setups:


Setup 1 ------

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.4GHz/3.8GHz Turbo LGA 1155 Quad-Core Processor (8MB L3 Cache)

Mobo: EVGA P67 SLI B3 stepping (USB 3.0, SATA 6Gb/s,)

System Cooling: Standard

Power Supply: 500 Watt Silverstone PSU

GPU: Single 1280MB GDDR5 Nvidia GTX 570

Memory: 4GB Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600Mhz (2x 2GB) Dual Channel Memory

Hard Drive: 320GB - SATA-II, 3Gb/s, 7,200RPM, 16MB Cache HDD

Optical Drive One: 24X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability

Setup 2 ------

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K overclocked 4.5GHz to 4.8GHz

Mobo: ASUS Sabertooth P67 (Intel P67 Chipset) (B3 Revision Without SATA 3G Issue)

System Cooling: Corsair H60 Liquid CPU Cooler

Power Supply: 800W Corsair GS (Dual SLI Compatible)

GPU: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 1GB (PhysX Tech)

Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair Vengeance Series

Hard Drive: 80GB Solid State

Hard Drive 2: 1TB Hitachi/Seagate (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache)

Optical Drive One: Blu-Ray Player/DVD Writer

I don't plan on playing any games on more than one monitor. I have a 30 inch monitor and I plan to play at 1920x1080 resolution.

Overall, Setup 2 seems better, but at a slightly higher price. My question comes down to this: I'd like to play my games at maxed out settings as much as possible. Is Setup 1 enough to do that (with my monitor and resolution expectations) or will it limit me in some way such that I should go with Setup 2?

I know that for some of you the Blu-Ray etc. might factor into the decision for some, but it doesn't matter to me as I already have a PC with that as well as a PS3 with that capability. This will be strictly a gaming PC, I won't be using it for browsing web, photos, documents, etc. Given that, is the extra stuff that Setup 2 has just fluff that I don't need or will the GPU and memory be worth it?

And, if it makes any difference, Setup 1 would be an Origin Genesis and Setup 2 would be a Digital Storm ODE (level 2). I don't know if one company is better.

500 W for 2600K + 570 seems a bit low, I'd be happier with 600-650 W.

The 2600K is pointless in a gaming PC. 2500K offers the same performance for a lot less money.

The HDD is small 🙁

4 GB RAM I'd actually call low in a gaming PC these days.

Overall it seems very expensive for the specification.



PSU, RAM, and HDD configuration looking superb. I'd still prefer an i5 though. I'm not entirely sure how the 560 SLI match up to a 570 in price/performance, but I'm usually partial to single GPU setups. Is it possible to request the second build with i5 +570, that'd be my recommendation?

Setup 2 comes from Digital Storm ODE, which is a fixed build so I can't change anything.

They do have another cheaper build that has the following specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600K overclocked 4.0GHz to 4.4GHz

Mobo: ASUS P8P67 LE (Intel P67 Chipset) (New B3 Revision) (Does Not Support SLI)

System Cooling: Corsair A70 Dual 120mm

Power Supply: 600W Corsair CX600 V2

GPU: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) (EVGA Edition)

Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair XMS3 Series

Hard Drive: 1x (1TB Hitachi/Seagate (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache)

Optical Drive One: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x)


This has the 570 but still an i7. Should the mobo be a concern?

Out of interest I built a similar system on Newegg, not actively hunting for the best offers. There are still better deals to be had. Yet the entire system including case, PSU, everything for less than 1 000$. That's with an i5 however - the i7 is $100 more.

either setup is good enough to play the latest 2011 games maxed. Although 80gb solid state, NO. they do not last as long and they do not have as much memory. The first choice i would go with. and any core i7 running with a GTX 570 will push games to the limit even with graphics mods. do some searching on youtube with that card and cpu.

After looking at all the major vendors (Maingear, Origin, FalconNW, and Digital Storm) I decided that the DS ODE provided the best deal for performance. However, I also decided that we are close enough to November that I'll wait till Black Friday to see if I can get an even better deal :)
