I would like to start by saying I have looked around on the forums and found similar threads but they weren't able to help me. I have an i3 cpu that I want to use for a new build. I took the cpu out of my main PC when I was upgrading it. I need to remove the thermal paste that is still on it. I heard you can use 90% isopropyl alcohol but I am not sure if this is true and I don't want to damage the CPU. I also need to get new thermal paste for it but I have no idea of which brand to buy or anything about it. I have never applied thermal paste before but I have watched a few different videos demonstrating different methods of applying it.

Solution
Almost any Isopropyl alcohol will do, I recommend 90 if you can get it, but anything over 70 is fine. Even 50 would be.
Use a coffee filter to clean it off.
Arctic MX-4 is a great paste.

Any non conductive paste is good. People over fret about thermal paste. Mystical things going on here. Olive oil will work. The paste manufs. all tell you that we have the answer. Antec, Arctic, etc. Get some and use it. There isn't a hill of beans difference between the different pastes.
Clean the CPU, put some new paste on, done.
