Like the title says, I'm planning on getting a 1080 this summer, and was wondering which model I should get. I was going to get the FTW/SC model from EVGA but I heard they had airflow issues, and I have a small case with not a lot of airflow. I'm looking for a cool running and well performing model around 500-560$.

Specs:
i7-4790 (Non-K) 3.6 Base, 4.0 Boost
AOC G2460PF 24-Inch F-sync 144hz
PNY Anarchy 16GB Kit (2x8GB) DDR3 1866MHz Underclocked to 1600MHz because of motherboard limits.
EVGA G3 650W 80+ Gold
931GB Western Digital WDCnWD10EZEX-75M2NA0

Vega is going to release some time next quarter with 1080 level performance.
However this is all speculation, can't say anything atm, not worth waiting for, not even a release date.
@OP, you can get the 1080, and then pay the difference to a 1080Ti if you want within 90 days, look up EVGA stepup.
Would it be too greedy of me to ask you to see if you can save for a 1080Ti? 😛
If possible that'd obviously be the best option, and your CPU is still one of the best on the market, but if you can't stretch it get this, absolutely fantastic value and EVGA have hands down the best service and customer support around.

You can also pay the difference within 90 days of purchase to upgrade to the next best card through their stepup program, in other words meaning you could get a 1080Ti later if you wanted more FPS with settings cranked.

So should I get the 1080, use until i can afford the Ti, or just dont get the 1080 and save until the Ti?

They confirmed release this quarter. With less than two months left, I believe it would be worth waiting to see the price to performance ratio and if it's competitive with the 1080 and 1080 ti, it could drive prices down.

Less than two months speculated, which would just be an announcement followed by stocking rollout and initial price hike which could mean you're waiting 3-4 months for a card that isn't guaranteed to perform 100%.
A 1080 is a good choice at the moment, you can't always be waiting for the next thing in tech, you'll be waiting forever, it's an endless cycle.

You are off on your timelines and it's confirmed, not speculation. By the end of next month it will be launched. I really, really want to buy a 1080 ti, but I don't want to kick myself in the arse for not being patient. If you can survive another 2 months, wait, if you need a card now, buy.

That's the max, if they release at the absolute end of Q2, but if you follow it closely, all indications are the end of May to early June. To each his own though. I have to talk myself out of buying a 1080 ti to complete my build every day.

To question your eariler answer, and I don't know if you know this, But is it possible to go from the 1080 Sc to the 1080 Ti sc2/SC black or the 1080 FTW to the 1080 Ti FTW3?
