I have a seasonic GX 1000w psu and MSI gaming trio 4090 it works great in my system but I hate the adapter

I went to cable mod selected my PSU and found I can order a 16 pin to 4x8 pin that plugs into the PSU or 16 to 3x8 pin that plugs into the PSU

Cable mod says the 4x8 pin is for a 4090 and 3x8 pin is for the 3090ti or 4080

given my the adapter with my card only required 3 8 pin should I be getting the 3 pin version even it doesn’t say 4090

I assume these cables are not the adapter and just 16 pin with 3 or 4 8 pin on other end that plug into the psu

The 4090 is self governing. That's the purpose of the sense pins and the IC chip that's in the stock adapter. It knows how many 8pins are plugged in for the full 600w capacity, it requires all 4x 150w 8pin. If you use just 3x 8pin, you'll only get a 450w max power draw, which is basically card standard clocks and no OC or extreme boost.

If you had to pick cable mod cable 16 pin to 3 or 4 8 pin or a seasonic 16 pin cable that only has two 8 pin ends in the psu with 16AWG wire. They are giving out free cables if you fill out a form.

This is getting confused. Don't mistake what Seasonic is giving for an adapter. It's not. It's a Seasonic psu outlet cable. It's direct from psu to gpu, so doesn't fit any other application unless specified.

CableMod is basically an OEM12vhpr that works on atx2 or atx3 psus. You'd need to order specifically for whichever psu you have. The 3x is for 3090/ti/4080 and the 4x is for the 4090/ti.

What you get from nvidia is a cable adapter to take your existing 8pin and convert to 12vhpr.

Dont confuse the 8pin gpu end with an 8pin psu end, they aren't the same thing. There's adapters and there's OEM, an adapter changes existing cables to 12vhpr, an OEM does not, an OEM Is 12vhpr.

ATX 3.0 12VHPWR is the new standard for powering high power PCIe devices.
Corsair already made a replacement connector for their PSUs that only uses 2 PCIe connectors on the PSU end and can give the full 600W of power on the GPU end. It's only compatible with certain (higher end) Corsair PSUs though.

I would get Seasonic's adapter to be absolutely sure -

Yes I have already filled out the form and been approved for a cable im just wondering because I can also select my PSU on cable mod.com and order a 16 pin cable which has 4 8 pin ends on the other side which plug into the PSU whereas the Seasonic cable only has 2 8 pin ends which plug into the PSU but it is 16AWG wire. I’m just wondering which is best.

I think it's too early for anyone to know for sure. There would have to be exhaustive tests done with both cables to get a definitive.

Im also wondering if either cable seasonic or cable mod is safe to use an msi gaming trio 4090 because the adapter was only 3x8pin.
Power is pulled not pushed. From a 'power only' standpoint, using a 4x8-pin adapter will work just fine, even if MSI's adapter is only 3x8pin. A good quality 2x8 pin to 12VHPWR is probably fine too, provided the gauge of wire and PSU connectors are rated by the mfg. for the full 600W.

Ok cool. I’m just gonna both cables the seasonic and the cable mod and if someone tests them down road I can swap them out for the better option

Check out the below article. Interesting test results when 3 cables are used. One is loaded fully while the other two are barely being used.
Again, in short, if it's a reputable company (like Corsair and Seasonic) giving you the 12VHPWR adapter, I think you'll be fine.

I will read that article when I get home from work. Also what if I got a cable from cable mod that has 3 ends instead of 4 that plug into the PSU cable mod says it’s for a 3090ti/4080 but it’s still 600w

You need to make sure it's got the sense pins. Some 3090Ti adapter cables don't. Other than that, there's no way to know how good their construction is without someone trying them.
Let us know how it goes! 👍
I assume it would have the sense if it says it’s for a 4080 I just don’t think I can get the official 4 end’s because I think I only have 3 ends available on my psu im pretty sure I have to double check

I’ll let you guys know
