Hello, I have a Gigabyte GTX 980 and my monitor is an Acer GN246HL.

That being said my budget wont allow for me to upgrade both at the sametime but I can do just one, so I want to know which I should upgrade and if anyone has recommendations I would like to know what and why I should.

Solution
GTX 980 is suppose to handle 4k screens (not max settings) and i know from my own experience the 980 ti (which i know yours isn't) pretty much matches or outperforms current cards up to GTX 1070. GTX 1080 ti would be only worthwhile upgrade imo but for a 1080p monitor is over kills unless you are considering a 144hz/240hz screen for competitive shooters. Even then the 980 still wouldn't be a bottle neck for 144hz monitors, would most likely be the cpu.

Of course there is an argument that if you use your monitor for mostly anything else 4k is pretty much wasted. Especially if you watch movies at a further distance.

I don't know how well the basic 980 fairs against the 980 ti but if i could control my geek out moments better id stick...

Get a 1080 ti sell the 980, consider upgrading CPU.
or
Buy a 4k monitor your current card can handle it on non maxed settings.

P.S
I hate Nvidia and amd; Nvidia take forever to upgrade cards bring out same cards with different numbers. AMD are a poor competitor. Makes picking an upgrade even harder decision to make.
