Photography, graphics cards that are made for gaming aren't optomised for applications such as 3ds max. You are best off with what they call a "professional" graphics card; in truth, often the only difference is that these professional cards have different drivers, but the same actual hardware.
So my best advice to you is to research which consumer-gaming graphics cards can be hacked with drivers made for the professional cards because the pro cards cost alot more. I know that an AMD 4870 can be turned into a firepro or something like that with certain drivers, and it makes it like 10x faster for 3D apps like max.
