I'm currently using vista 64 ultimate. I'm in the process of buying and assembly of a new computer. I was wondering what you guys think is best, should I just get Win7 professional or win 8.1.
I heard that win 8 was a letdown and I was wondering if they fixed the issues in and is 8.1 closer to 7 as far as usability (the normal desktop icons) in that it doesn't make you use the tiles. Are there any real advantages in 8.1 vs. 7 for someone with a new build? It seems like support for vista will disappear soon as they have already stopped support for SP1

Thanks,
Sebastian

What I would do is run into a local Best Buy or some other large retail shop and ask if they have any demo systems running 8.1 so you can try it out and decide if you like it or not.

Personally, I loved 8, and I love 8.1 even more. The only issue I had with 8 was not being able to boot directly to the desktop, and that option was added in 8.1. Definitely try it for yourself first though. If you don't like it, go for Windows 7.

To my knowledge there is very little difference "under the hood" between 7, 8, and 8.1. Performance should be more or less the same. The "differences" is mostly in the interface. I agree that you should try out a demo. Don't let the negative "hype" on 8 influence your choice on buying. I hated 7 until I upgraded and finally used it. Yes the GUI is different. YOU might not find tiles to be that bad. It's not like vista where there were real problems under the hood. (and a let down as we basically got no or one "pillar".) So give it a shot, you might like it.
