Core i7 system = out of reach, add to the price of DDR3 memory.
If you play more than video editing go for the 720 BE. If you edit more than play, the 810.

There's an Intel Core i7 920 that's selling for $229 at Microcenter.
For that price, in comparison to Phenom II 940, I think the Core would be a better deal.

I've been an AMD fan ever since AMD 486DX2 days. I've never built an Intel for myself because, bang for the buck, AMD ruled.

I currently have AMD Athlon XP 2800+, and video rendering is a joke, now.
But $229 for a CPU is overkill, because in 6 months it'll be cheaper, just the way it is.

So, looks like I am going for Phenom II X3 720 BE for it's overclocking feature.
Benchmarks all over the web shows it pretty close to Phenom II 940 and Core i7.

Thanks for everyones input.

Now to find a matching motherboard, and Video card.
Is ASUS good, I'm so confused, so many different models.

I am fine with DDR2.
Video card, I plan to spend about $175. Any suggestions for games and video editing?

thanks!

The i7 "is" a better deal than the phenom. Thats if you're only comparing the cpu price and not the board plus ram. Then the intel platform will end up costing more.

The PII is not "close" to i7 except in gaming by the way.

For a gaming machine def go with AMD. The x3 be is perfect for that. Peforms well and is cheap.

Now comes the hard choice. How much video editing do you do? Would it be enough to pay the extra money to get the intel system that will excel at that task? If not. Get a PII x4 over the x3. The extra core helps in video editing apps( if they take use of 4 cores of course).

If your going to be doing a good deal of video editing go with 4 cores over 3.
