Which would sound better

Would a mix amp and a pair of sony mdr xb500s sound good for playing games on the pc? Im not big on gaming headsets as they arent always the best for watching movies and listening to music

You're right. Gaming headsets aren't ideal for music.
They sacrifice sound quality for surround effects and booming bass.

For music you want a balanced tonal response, right down to deep bass if you can.
It's easier to turn up the bass in the range you can reproduce than actually engineer a solution to reproduce lower frequency sound.
Loud bass jumps out at you in a shop and Sony, at least with sound systems, have a nasty habit of making systems with lots of bass but not enough balance or clarity.

As for the mix amp, consider instead a sound card that supports Dolby headphone.
This gives you a virtual surround solution with stereo headphones.
