Hello im trying to build a workstation:
Im going with double xeon. Whats the difference between

Intel Xeon E5-2620 Sandy Bridge-EP 2.0GHz (2.5GHz Turbo Boost) 15MB L3 Cache LGA 2011 95W Six-Core Server Processor
And
Intel Xeon E3-1230 V2 Ivy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo) 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1155 69W Quad-Core Server Processor

Solution
The e5-2620 is the only one of the two that could run in a dual cpu setup. The e3-1230 is nothing more than a rebadged i7.

"better" is a relative term. The e3 would be much better in gaming, and sungle threaded tasks, but the e5 would be better at number crunching and has the advantage of being ran in tandem with another.

The E3-1230 v2 is single socket IIRC. So you can't go dual with it.

With that said, that's my CPU of choice for the new build I'm putting together. The E3-1230 v2 is a hidden gem IMO, especially for its price.

Will i benefit from dual socketed E5-2620 for 3d rendering?
Does this system work?
2x intel XEON E5-2620
8x8 64gb ram g-skill ripjaws z series
Quadro K4000
Corsair psu
128gb ssd
Asus Z9PE-D8 motherboard

i see.
i noticed that the E5-2620 is @ 2.0Ghz and turbo boosts @ 2.5Ghz
does turbo boost mean overclocking?
how can i keep it at 2.5 Ghz? if yes then how?
the ivy bridge does look more interesting. what are the main differences between sandy bridge and ivy bridge?

Turbo is not overclocking. Turbo is a factory boost when needed and when temps allow. You cannot overclock those Xeons or keep them at their turbo speed indefinitely. Ivy Bridge is newer than Sandy Bridge, is around 10% more powerful at the same clock speed, and is also more efficient.

The 2620v2 is about 12-15% more powerful than the 2620. The 2630v2 is around 40% more powerful than the 2620.

i think ill go with the ivy bridge then.
i need all the processing power i can get.
regarding RAM, if the motherboard says DDR3 1600 then that means i can ONLY go with RAM that are DDR3 1600 right?
