Question White blur spreads across screen?

Hello all,

I am using a Samsung SyncMaster 940BW. This morning while trying to hook it up, whenever it turns on while connected to my computer, it displays a small portion of the top of the screen, and this white blur fades in and spreads across the screen, until eventually fading away and the screen goes black. Have I screwed up my monitor?

Update: the screen has decided to start working again. Thanks for none of the help, I guess.
