Who has got that tune?

Hi all

During the high-days of mahjong in the USA, there was a popular song,
called 'Since Ma is Playing Mah Jong', sung by Eddie Cantor in 'Kid
Boots', and written by Billy Rose and Con Conrad (ukulele
accompaniment!).

It started like this:

I've got a wonderful mother
but of late she's not the same.
Things were O.K. until the day
Ma learned a new Chinese game.

I think I saw the sheet music in the Chiba Mahjong Museum. But although
I have looked a lot for it, I never succeeded in obtaining a copy of
the actual song, either on vinyl (78 rpm!) either digital.
So I wonder if anyone of this NG has a digital version? It would do
great in the mahjong movie I am making.

Thanks for your help :)

Hello Martin,

Very interesting. It's the sort of things I like to collect. I don't
have a copy, but I found
http://www.redhotjazz.com/songs/om5/sincema.ram . I'll starting
searching for a better copy right now.

Nath.

There's a Eddi Cantor Appreciation Society (
http://www.eddiecantor.com/ ) who might help you.

This is not the full original text of course.
I own the note sheet with the full text and indeed - that is soft racism pure ...

Nethertheless: It is Mah-Jongg history!

Cheers,
Uwe

I imagine that on live radio they played the full version. But on
disc, it was hard (if not impossible) to record more than 3 minutes of
music. Thus the existence of the short version.

Uwe, I'd be most interested to read the full text. Please post it here!
And yes, I would love to recieve a scan of that note sheet.

Meanwhile, I am still looking for the original Eddie Cantor recording.
The e-mail address of the Cantor-fanclub does not seem to be valid
anymore. So more help would be greatly appreciated.

Tom (helloooooo!), you seem to entertain a good relationship with NMJL.
Would not they know anything?

I think it's unlikely that they would know where you could get the Eddie
Cantor recording. You would have more luck trying collectors of old 78rpm
records, methinks.
