Personally I don't think it is, but I have seen people talking about how Opera GX is spyware because the parent company is Chinese. I use Opera GX on the daily I have never encountered any suspicious activity, and Windows Defender and Malwarebytes have never reported anything about my browser.

I should mention that the only reason I switched was because the stutter from a Chrome update during a Fortnite match caused me to lose the match because of the FPS jumping from 100+ down to 15 or less and back. I don't understand why chrome decided to update right then. I thought that game mode in windows was supposed to prevent this.

A quick read seems to indicate that the VPN service is actually a proxy which is sending data back to the Chinese consortium that owns Opera at this point. With that aspect said, the version out now is based in Chromium, so I would expect no less metadata collection from it than any other browser. There isn't, nor should there be, any inferred expectation that anything you do on your electronic device or browser is secret in any way at all. No matter what you are doing, someone is collecting information about it, as much as they can.

There was a big fluff a couple of years back from an outgoing highly ranked CIA official that basically put out a warning the last day/heading out the door that every electronic device made in China, and any Chinese National within our country should be considered a security risk. Digging further into that allegation was that in some cases many of the human factor involved are unwilling and unwitting perpetrators of such activity. In other words, not every Chinese National is a deep plant spy or such.

We do have to keep in mind that we are actively involved in a technology war with China. This is, in part, why the big fluff about high end graphics cards and AI hardware being sent over there. There is a lot more to it, and likely to drift my posting into deletion if I haven't arrived already...
