Why a sound card with speakers

my friend bought new logitech LS11 speakers for her acer vista pc. it says work with sound card? she wired up, got green light, but no sound, what is sound card and why no sound, thanks

Yes green to green m8, Ive advised her on these items, she says all colours match, I thought she had turned the speaker icon off on her pc, but again she says this is on. Knowing mothers-in law, 1 wee thing is not right. I cannot get to see for myself, as she is snowed in, anyway, thanks for your help
