I see many defective hard drives on ebay for a couple bucks and some for 50 to 100 dollars or more. Why are some worth so much more?

One of reasons may be disk controller boards which could be swapped (with some mods) instead of burnt out ones and so save data from otherwise good HDDs. Another reason is that HDDs contain very powerful magnets and a lot of recyclable aluminium..
