Why are high res textures in minecraft so hard to run?

So i have come down with the flu and i went back to minecraft for the first time in a couple years earlier today to pass some time. I decided to get a 512x512 texture pack. Which i guess is super high res? I have a 1070 and 16 gigs of ram and the pack closed my game saying i dont have enough memory. Is it supposed to be that bad?

If windows came up with a message saying you are low on memory that means you are using close to all or all of your system ram. I dont know what texture pack you are using but there is absolutely no way it is legitimately making use of 16gb's of system ram and texture packs I have installed in games like skyrim only use more VRAM not system ram. I would guess whatever mod your using was not put together well and is causing a memory leak.

Remember thats 512x512, or 262mb PER BLOCK for each texture so its a huge amount of data.

You probably need to tell minecraft to use more memory. The default is quite low so people on very low end systems can still run. note that if you set it to high then you will get extreme lag spikes. try with 4GB and see what you get.

you may also be better off getting a lower rez texture pack. 128x128 or such.

normally its recommended to allocate half system ram but not many people do that i dont believe,i leave mine on 2 gb allocated and it works fine, you can get away with 4 as you have 16 gigs system ram, good luck :)
