Why are LAN speeds so slow?

Transfering large file between two wired computers.
I have RT-AC66U router (4 Gbps LAN)
Must I simply buy better ethernet cards on both machines?

Solution
Even thought the router can transfer 4GBps, that theoretical in a perfect word. You also have to consider the hard drive, the speed of the Ethernet card, and also what type of cable you are using. Not to mention, other network connections going on.

For example, USB 3.0 had 5GBps speeds, right? When I transfer to my HDD, i get maybe 100 megaBTYES per second, but when I use my SSD, I'm getting 500 megaBYTES persecond. I hope that helps.

I feel your pain. But every one seems to forget that the data transfer rate is determined by the pc's hardware, not the network speed. Also cable quality is critical over 100mb. Try to set LAN speed to 100mb and verify network speed. Then work your way up in speed from there.
