Why are some models of the GTX 970's increasing from ~300 usd to ~600 usd?

I bought a GTX 970 from newegg in the beginning of last year, and I got it for around 300 dollars. I was looking back at the card (perhaps to order another for duals) and the price had jumped 200 usd on newegg! I mean its more expensive than a 1070... Did I miss something?'

I am guessing the ads aren't officially by the manufacturers. Why not get the 1070 instead?

The price of the GTX 970 seems to have increased becasue they want your to buy the newer and better GTX 1060. Or atleast thats what i think.
