Why are there more then one?

When doing some manual registry cleaning I found out that there are 3 ControlSet's in my registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM , with the names:
ControlSet001
ControlSet002
CurrentControlSet

These three controlsets seem to contain similair information with only some hardware installments differences. I think that the 001 and 002 controlsets are old controlsets of previous hardware (I installed a new mobo and more without reformating) while the CurrentControlSet is the one of the current configuration... am I right? And can I delete the older controlsets to clean up the registry from useless and out-dated keys?

Thanks in advance!

Very interesting, but is ControlSet002 (and maybe also ControlSet001) vital or can they be deleted? I already found out that they both contain lots of non-existing or multiplied hardware keys.

You can delete anything you like, it wont "clear up space" in the registry in any way, but on the other hand might damage yer sistem. ControlSet is a Control Set which controls sets of hardware/software settings installed on your putir. Any modification/deletion will result in infringement or corruption of services installed.

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

what he said. Don't muck with the registry unless absolutely necessary. Thats my policy, anyway.

But there is so much junk in my registry. My monitor can be found 7 times in Wizard Hardware on more like that. I just want to have the current things in it and not all old hardware junk... anybody knows how I can remove that?

Just format and reinstall! That'll get rid of everything old; and if there are any duplicates created afterwards then they need to be there.
