Why are TV displays still so fragile?

When phones are working on getting stronger, TV displays can never touched and are a nightmare to clean and so easy to scratch. Why don't they put gorilla glass or something on them and have the screen underneath like phones do? Or maybe they already do? IDK

Same for laptops (I don't know what they use now so they could have solved this issue already I don't know)

How does one even know if it's scratched or just needs a clean?

The fail modes are different.
A dropped TV will fail, gorilla glass or no. A phone, maybe...

with TVs your not supposed to touch them and stuff and TV manufactures decide to make the TV thinner than stronger which I respect because again, they're not meant to be carried around with you everywhere

Phone - 10 sq in
55" TV - 1300 sq in

Phone - touched hundreds of times daily
TV - touched once every 6 months

Personally, I would not pay extra to have gorilla glass on my TV. I'm not smearing my fingers all over it every day, nor is it subject to rain, falling in a puddle, or the crap in your pocket.

Your cheetoh encrusted mitts may have a different relationship with your TV.

I know you're not,, but why not both? It will fewer marked even if you don't touch it. My old TV and the living room one are proof. Mine may be a little scratched from trying to get some dust off no pressure was applied)

That is a market of one - you.

Unless you are exceptionally careless, TV's don't die from touching it too much. Simply because you do not touch them.

How much would that cost to add 1300 sq inches of that to a TV?
How much weight?

I prefer stuff to last for ages (preferably while looking good). Just like I'd take a phone with better battery and higher durability over a phone that shaves a millimeter off the current sizes. Phones are thin enough. Industry isn't making them though. Nokia might, who knows.

I don't care much about the weight of the the TV. I'm not moving it, I'm not wall mounting it, so slap something on the to make it cleanable. Phones manage to make themselves thin and cleanable, they also hit the same resolutions (different tech though) and they're touchscreen. Plus many of them can stand up to things as hard as keys just fine and they take drops

TVs won't die from touching it too much, true. But it would be cool to have one that can take a bit more of a beating

And both of my TV's are wall mounted. 60" and 39". Gorilla on that would be significantly heavier and costlier, for zero performance gain.

If TV's needed a tough screen like a phone, you would be able to find one for sale.
There is no market for that extra cost.
