Why bother

If you have a facility to insert external links into your text and the facility is broke
to the point where the links dont work and your just left with [URL]
inside your text, then why bother to have an edit button if your not allowed to edit
your posts, particularly to fix broken links. ??

The URL function works perfectly, you are just not using it right. The correct syntax is:

[ url=www.google.com]Some text to show up[/url] (without the space in the first tag obviously)

If you do not put text between the two URL tags, such as you didn't in your example above, it will not work. If you don't want to display custom text for the URL, just don't use the tags, and simply paste in the URL as www.google.com

As for the editing function, if you're on the UK site this is a known bug and has existed for... well I don't know if it ever worked right.
